Is Your Hair Dryer a Threat to Your Health?
By Abdul Rashid
Summary
The linkage of children’s leukemia to regular hair dryers was reported by the US Government.
ABC Eyewitness News urged people to stop using hair dryers because their magnetic fields can damage the brain cell DNA.
Leading scientists from both the USA and Japan had independently confirmed that both men and women can develop breast cancer when they are exposed to ELF MFs (extremely low frequency magnetic fields).
The new “Angelite” hair dryer is designed to be safe against leukemia and breast cancer, and it will not damage the brain cell DNA.
Scientific Facts on Children’s Leukemia
Leading Scientists from the USA discovered the linkage of children’s leukemia to regular hair dryers.
In 1990 the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) stunned the country by classifying the ELF MFs as a possible human carcinogen.1 Its report, “An Evaluation of Potential Carcinogenicity of Electromagnetic Fields,” is identified as the cancer report. These findings of the health hazards from the ELF MFs by the EPA led the US Congress to initiate the EMF RAPID program at a cost of more than $60 million dollars. The purpose of this program was to assess the health hazards of ELF MFs to humans. Scientists from all over the world worked under this program and their assessments were documented in the US Government report, NIH98-3981 August 1998.2 This assessment included the health hazards from home appliances. One of the appliances identified in this document as a health hazard was the regular hair dryer. The linkage of leukemia to regular hair dryers was reported on page 180 of this report. It is stated on this page that the risks of leukemia from the regular hair dryers was discovered by Dr. Stephanie London, who studied 232 cases of children’s leukemia in Los Angeles County, CA.3
The NCI (National Cancer Institute) also investigated the health hazards to children from hair dryers. They investigated 2530 cases of children’s leukemia within nine states (Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania). On the basis of this study, they concluded that children had an elevated risk of leukemia from regular hair dryers.
Brain Cell DNA Damage:
ABC Eyewitness News on February 20, 2004, urged people to stop using electrical appliances as their ELF MFs can damage brain cell DNA.
ABC Eyewitness News coverage was based on the work of Dr. Henry Lai4 from the University of Washington at Seattle, Washington. He and the members of his team exposed rats to ELF MFs at 100mG (milligauss). The test showed that the brain cell DNA of rats can be damaged by exposing their brains to magnetic fields at 100mG. The test result on rats was extended to people, stating that human brain cell DNA damage will also occur when they are exposed to the ELF MFs at 100mG. The hair dryer was identified as a possible source of such high EMFs.
Scientific Facts on Breast Cancer:
Scientists from the USA and Japan independently discovered that both men and women can contract breast cancer from ELF MFs.
The US Government funded research to our National Laboratories to find the possibilities of generating breast cancer by ELF MFs.
In 1994, Dr. Robert P. Liburdy from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was the first to discover that the cancer cell MCF-7 can grow in humans when they are exposed to 12 mG of ELF MFs. It is stated in the Lawrence laboratory report that the test results of these interactions provide the first evidence that ELF MFs can act at the cellular level to enhance breast cancer proliferation by blocking melatonin’s natural onocostatic action.5 These are the findings of other leading scientists from the US and Japan on the interaction between the ELF MFs at 12 mG and human breasts. A team of scientists led by Dr. Larry Anderson at the Battle Pacific Northwest Lab found that an exposure of ELF MFs at and above 12 mG to humans can block the protective action of melatonin against the growth of human breast cancer cell MCF-7.6 This was the fourth lab to find that the human breast cancer cells’ proliferation had been inhibited by melatonin, but resumed growing in the 12mG magnetic fields. In 1998, Dr. Blackman from the EPA7 and Dr. Richard Luben8 from USC at Riverside each reported replication of Lawrence Laboratory’s experiment. In 2001, the National Institute of Environmental Studies of Japan also found the same results from the EMF-melatonin experiment.9
Safe ELF MF Levels:
4mG: Scientists from the USA and other countries had joined together in Lynn, France, in 2000 and established that children’s risks of leukemia are very high when they are exposed to ELF MFs at and above 4 mG (Microwave News, September/October, 2000). The scientists who participated in establishing the 4mG safe level were Dr. Martha Lenet (National Cancer Institute), USA; Dr. Nicolas Day, UK; Dr. Mary McBride, Canada; Dr. Maria Feychting, Sweden; Dr. Jorg Michaelis, Germany; Dr. Jorgen Olsen, Denmark; Dr. Torey Tynes, Norway; Dr. Pia Verkassalo, Finland. It must be noted that these are the leading scientists in their countries.
2mG: The NCRP (National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement) endorsed the limitation of ELF MF exposure to the US population to 2mG (MWN, July/August, 1998).
8mG: The Swedish Government passed a low to limit the ELF MF exposure of the Swedish population to 8mG (MWN).
2mG: The EPA awarded a contract to the NCRP to evaluate the health effects of ELF MFs to humans. Led by Dr. Ross Adey from the Loma Linda Veteran Memorial Hospital at Loma Linda, CA, the chairman, and other members of the NCRP reviewed the world’s health data for nine years and, on the basis of this study, endorsed the limitation of the ELF MF exposure of the US population to 2mG. To minimize the impact on the economy, the NCRP recommended that the 2mG requirements be imposed immediately at schools, day care centers and such, and everywhere else within 10 years (MWN). In 1998 the US Government had a meeting in Tucson, AZ, to review the US Government report NIH98-3981. At the meeting, Mr. Rashid from EMHHC, Inc, asked the US Government representative when the 2mG law would be passed. Dr. Ross Adey, chairman of the NCRP, replied that the US Government was not working, at this time, to pass the 2mG law.
Regular Hair Dryers
1.) ABC Eyewitness News announced on February 20, 2004 that EMFs from hair dryers can damage the brain cells’ DNA.
2.) The US Government had already reported the linkage of leukemia to regular hair dryers.
3.) The ELF MFs from the regular hair dryers, reported by the US Government, can be as high as 700mG, which is much higher than the normal recommended levels
The US Government investigated the ELF MFs from regular hair dryers and the results of the investigation were reported in the US Government report DOE/EE-0040 (January 10). On page 36 of this report, it is written that the ELF MFs from regular hair dryers are very high and can be as high as 700mG.10
The high ELF MFs from ordinary hair dryers may be the cause of their linkage to children’s leukemia as reported by the US Government (NIH 98-3981, August 1998). Ordinary hair dryers may be a cause of breast cancer, as the ELF MFs from them are much higher than 12mG, at which both men and women can contract breast cancer, as described above. Ordinary hair dryers may also damage the brain cell DNA because the ELF MFs from them are much higher than 100mG, at which the damage to brain cell DNA occurs, as reported above.
Angelite Hair Dryers:
The Angelite hair dryer is designed to be safe against leukemia and breast cancer and will not damage brain cell DNA.
The ELF MFs from Angelite hair dryers are limited to the safe ELF MF level of 2mG at about two inches from the front of the hair dryer. The ELF MFs from the back of the hair dryers are also limited to 2mG at about four inches from the back of the hair dryer.
The ELF MFs from the Angelite hair dryer are:
· 50 times less than the 100mG EMFs needed to damage the brain cell DNA,
· 6 times less than the 12mG of EMFs to develop breast cancer, and
· 2 times less than the 6 mG of EMFs needed for high risk of leukemia.
