Juice Fasting part 3
6. Promotes Spiritual Growth
Fasting is a powerful method to enable one to live and walk in the Spirit of God rather than in the flesh. As mentioned previously, the flesh is not just a sin nature that wants to live independently from God; flesh is also what you do in your own strength and ability as opposed to doing in God’s strength. When you start to fast immediately your flesh cries out “feed me” and those who are very weak in the flesh give in and let their flesh have whatever it wants, i.e.: food, drink, sex, entertainment, etc. So in order to tame the flesh, we must learn to live and walk not in our weakness but in HIS strength. What this means is as the Apostle Paul said so wonderfully when I am weak then I am strong (2 Cor. 12:10.) When I get to the end of myself that’s when Jesus can then carry me in His strength. This is living and walking in the Spirit of God. Just as Jesus walked in the Spirit and did not give in to the temptations of the devil while he fasted for 40 days in the wilderness, we also can walk in the Spirit drawing on the Spirit’s power to strengthen us in our weakness. This is truly glorious because when we start embracing weakness, so all the more His strength manifests and then God will get the glory for bringing us through the circumstance and we will grow spiritually learning how to live in the strength of the Spirit rather than the strength of the flesh. Another benefit to fasting is more clearly hearing the voice of God. When we put ourselves in flesh weakening situation like fasting, we start to experience the awesome presence of His Spirit strengthening and empowering us to do what we knew we could not do by ourselves, or in our own ability. As we experience more and more of this walking in the Spirit of God and not in the flesh, the flesh and the worldly system have less and less a hold on us. The first time I fasted for one day I thought I was going to die. I was starving — by 1:00 PM and decided to compromise by fasting only until sundown rather than 24 hours. This was my flesh crying out and I giving it what it wanted. But as I learned to walk in the strength of the Spirit, I actually started to embrace the hunger pangs because I knew I was reaching the end of my strength and will power and that is when God’s strength would manifest to carry me through. So embrace the weakness and pain of fasting because you will experience the presence and glory of God’s Spirit carrying you through.
Lastly I would like to clarify the purpose of fasting. Fasting does not move God in anyway. It does not impress Him or get Him to hear you more because of it. Fasting changes YOU. It opens you more to experience and live in the Spirit of God, and as you do this, His voice will be heard more clearly by you. Remember that God loves you no matter what you do because God is love. His love is not dependent on what you do, but on who He is. So do not fast too legalistically, trying to move God on your behalf, but instead fast to experience the presence, wisdom and power of God as He manifests, and you will mature in Him and walk in the strength of His Spirit.
To close, fasting should be a way of life. Everyone should fast somehow in their life, whether a one day juice fast per week or three day juice fast per month or a seven day juice fast four times per year (season changes) or even all of the above. Whenever you are ill, stop eating and start juicing, you will get better a lot quicker. Also, when juicing try to stick with predominantly vegetable juices (as opposed to fruit juice) and go green whenever possible. The green vegetables, grain grasses, and sprouts are the most health promoting of the juices. Fasting will greatly add to your healthy body, healthy mind and healthy spirit, promoting total health = wholeness.
The first time I juice-fasted for seven days, I was concerned I would lose energy and become very tired and weak. On the contrary, not only did I have loads of energy, I also was able to stay up later, get less sleep and still feel great. It also enabled me to hear the voice of God much more clearly.
