Alkaline/Acid Foods
Now a word about alkaline/acid foods. Our body functions in an alkaline pH. This means that there is a greater concentration of hydroxyl ions (OH-) as compared to hydrogen ions (H+). The hydroxyl ions are in greater concentration in plant origin food whereas the hydrogen ions are in greater concentration in animal origin food. To maintain the absolute necessary 7.4 body pH (7 is neutral) which is slightly alkaline we need to ingest enough plant origin food. A diet that is largely animal products (meat, chicken, fish, milk, and eggs) is very acid forming and stressful to the normal homeostasis or balance of the body. This increases the chances of all diseases like cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis etc. So it makes sense that the more alkaline our food is the better it is for our health. Similarly, the more acidic our food is, the worse it is for our health. For the most part fruits and vegetables are alkaline-forming, grains are slightly acid forming (except quinoa, millet and amaranth), and animal products are more acid forming.
